THE KALANDRAKA PROJECT

International Children’s Book Day, on the 2nd of April, marks the birth of publishing house Kalandraka Editora. It was 1988, and it had become clear that there was a gap in the world of publishing in Galicia: picture books, with a major tradition in other European countries, were lacking in the region. And so Kalandraka decided to dedicate itself to the picture book format, to present young readers a different type of book: adaptations of traditional tales, children’s classics and new stories promoting the work of an up-and-coming generation of new authors and illustrators. Our “Books for Dreaming” were born. Encouraging reading amongst a younger public has been one of the cornerstones of Kalandraka from the very outset, as books fuel the imagination and help to awaken curiosity and creativity in children, and to educate them from a visual, aesthetic and emotional perspective. Kalandraka’s sessions to promote reading frequently visit schools, libraries and bookshops, bringing all of the magic that books contain. Its work as a publisher has been acknowledged by the general public, critics and institutions, who have awarded prizes to some of the books that occupy pride of place in the catalogue, such as “Little White Rabbit,” “Where did the Moon loose its smile?” or “Artifacts.” Then came Kalandraka’s leap onto the international market, with the translation of its books into other languages and its appearance at the sector’s most important trade fairs. With a major focus on the importance of teamwork, a solid commitment to culture and in permanent contact with its readers, Kalandraka looks towards the future with its sights set on continuing to produce books that are both attractive and stand the test of time.
